Belém-Trancão, a green corridor
Raise awareness to Environmental best practices
The environmental study group GEOTA and the Vodafone Portugal Foundation organised a mass cycle ride in 2007 and 2008 from the Belém Tower to Parque do Tejo e Trancão to call for the creation of a Green Corridor for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
GEOTA and the Vodafone Portugal Foundation organised the initiative to draw the attention, not just of the responsible authorities but also of the general public, to the advantages of a Green Corridor along the waterfront of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, especially in improving the quality of life of Lisbon residents and the environment in the capital.
The Green Corridor concept, which has been successfully applied in many European capitals, consists of creating a continuous route which, as it weaves through the city, links up and unifies isolated natural areas and cultural and historic sites.
In addition to providing opportunities for exercise and leisure by linking up green spaces and various heritage sites, the Corridor will offer many Lisbon commuters an ecological alternative to their usual journey between home and work.
