Environmental Clean-up of the River Leça
Clean up and banks restoring of the River Leça
The River Leça flows for 46.75 km from its source to its mouth through a heavily industrialised area and a major conurbation. According to a European survey, it is currently one of the most polluted rivers in Europe.

The Vodafone Foundation funded for three years an important initiative launched by Valongo Municipal Council to clean up the River Leça and restore its banks along a section situated between the municipalities of Santo Tirso and Maia.

The water quality monitoring system for the 8 km of the River Leça that pass through Valongo Municipality. This innovative system unique in Portugal was developed by the University of Porto's Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), as a result of a partnership between FEUP, Valongo Municipality and Vodafone Foundation.

The innovation in the system basically consists in the way in which modern information technologies are used. Three mobile monitoring stations undertake the regular collection of analytical data which they broadcast continuously to FEUP, where they are analysed and processed. The data are transmitted via a Virtual Dialup Private Network (VDPN). This type of network offers greater efficiency and stability in the transmission of data. .
