Blood coagulation index monitoring via mobile technologies
In April 2005, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation signed a co-operation agreement with Santa Marta Hospital to integrate mobile communications technologies with the hospital’s information systems. Among the various facilities that are the likely outcome, the hospital is already using the system for monitoring the blood coagulation index of transplant patients or other post-surgery patients where it is important to maintain that index within a certain range.
Since the index requires close monitoring through regular measurements at short intervals of time, patients have to make regular visits to hospital. This new tool substantially reduces the time spent visiting hospital for analyses and the waiting time to receive the results since, with the aid of mobile technology, the results, prescriptions and any parameters outside the normal range are communicated instantly.
The Vodafone Portugal Foundation supported this project with 153,000 euros, which included the development of an application for managing communications with patients, including a link to their medical history, and the purchase of blood coagulation index measurement equipment and all mobile communications for the project.
