Digitisation of the Imagiology Service at CHMT
Digitisation of the Imagiology exams at CHMT, for sharing between the units of this hospital centre
In December 2004, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation signed a co-operation agreement with the Mid-Tejo Hospital Group (CHMT) which comprises three geographically separated hospitals - Torres Novas, Tomar and Abrantes.
A donation of around 100,000 euros enabled Abrantes Hospital to purchase PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) equipment, which was required for the catalogued storage of the digitised images of all its imagiology examinations. Since the other two hospitals in the Mid-Tejo Hospital Group already have their imagiology archives digitised, this project not only now covers the whole of the population in the CHMT’s area but also makes it possible for doctors in the three hospitals to consult any examination carried out at any one of them.
The system avoids unnecessary repetitions of examinations and images and cuts out some visits by patients, especially by the elderly. Lastly, it makes for the easier and faster sharing of results and exchange of images between doctors, thereby saving resources and reducing the toxic waste contained in radiography plates.
