Safe Taxi System
Contribute to the safety of taxi drivers by preventing or discouraging assaults
This is an innovative and pioneering project that aims to contribute to the safety of taxi drivers by preventing or discouraging possible assaults and facilitating a faster and more efficient police response. Developed by the Vodafone Portugal Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior and the Public Security Police (PSP), it initially covered around 700 taxis operating in the Greater Lisbon area (Alenquer, Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Loures, Montijo, Odivelas, Oeiras, Seixal, Setúbal, Sintra, Torres Vedras and Vila Franca de Xira). Since February 2007, the system has also been operating in the Oporto Metropolitan Area. The Safe Taxi System is based on the integration of GSM, GPS, Internet and digital cartography technologies, enabling the police to determine the location of the vehicle in real time as soon as the driver gives the alarm, either when stationary or on the move. With access to the sounds inside the vehicle at risk, the police are able to determine exactly how dangerous the situation is, and decide immediately what action to take. The Vodafone Portugal Foundation developed this open system that could cover all taxis in Portugal whose on-board localisation equipment meets the necessary technical specifications.
