Preventing, detecting and fighting forest fires in Leiria, Santarém e Castelo Branco
In July 2004, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation implemented with huge success a pioneering programme for preventing, detecting and fighting forest fires in the Leiria region, one of the areas of Portugal most affected by this type of disaster. The results of the Green Leiria initiative were so positive that the project was expanded the following year to cover the districts of Santarém and Castelo Branco, and adopted its present name: Floresta + Verde. This three-year initiative involves a total investment of 825,000 euros.
Equipment donated:
- Four light aircraft
- Nine firefighting vehicles
- Resources management application
- Geolocalisation equipment and mobile communications installed in the aircraft and in over 100 vehicles (fire tenders and command and communications vehicles) and individual localisation devices needed to co-ordinate the various resources and take decisions in real time
