Environmental Aspects
  • Mobile phones, accessories and batteries
This programme is concerned with the collection and subsequent channelling for re-use or recycling, through properly licensed operators, of all mobile phones and accessories that no longer meet the necessary standards of quality or whose modification is uneconomic. All Vodafone Shops contain a small collection point specifically designed for depositing this type of equipment. In the second half of 2002, this programme was extended to exclusive agents, and there are now over 100 collection points nationwide.

  • Generation of Waste
The main forms of waste generated by Vodafone's activities relate to electrical and computer equipment, paper, batteries, fluorescent lamps and toner cartridges. Vodafone has introduced processes for managing the various types of waste produced with the objective of reducing quantities and increasing recovery rates (re-use/recycling). In 2002, around 130 tonnes of waste were sent for recovery.

  • Infrastructure Sharing
At the design stage of antennas, an assessment is made, based on technical, financial, safety and landscape protection criteria, to determine the best location from both the technical and environmental point of view.Wherever possible, Vodafone shares antenna towers with other operators in order to minimise environmental impacts.Where feasible, Vodafone employs techniques for blending antennas into the surrounding landscape.

  • Management of waste packaging
Waste packaging from Vodafone products is managed through an Integrated Waste Packaging Management System. The system is managed by the Ponto Verde Association, with which Vodafone signed a contract in 1998. Vodafone makes an annual payment to Ponto Verde for each package that it puts on the market in return for Ponto Verde guaranteeing to recover and recycle this type of waste.

  • Impoverishment of the ozone layer
Vodafone uses air conditioning equipment in its offices and laboratories to control the temperature in these premises.Vodafone has a management programme in place for this equipment in order to ensure that, by the dates stipulated in the legislation, all refrigeration gases used comply with legal requirements.
