The Company’s entry in 1992 into a market exclusively dominated by a state-owned operator radically changed the prevailing perception of the mobile phone, which until then was seen as a status symbol or a gadget reserved for a well-off elite. We challenged this image by introducing a new concept of a useful, affordable service, capable of responding to all customers’ communications needs.

Vodafone was the key development and growth engine of the Portuguese cellular market, bringing about profound change in the mobile telecommunications scene in Portugal.

Since we started to operate our business, we have been a key player in the telecommunications market in Portugal and a leader in innovation, brand image and customer satisfaction.

We have over 6 million customers registered on our cellular service, corresponding to over one third of all mobile service customers in the national market. We want to be the most admired company in the telecommunications sector and one of the overall most admired companies in Portugal and we continue to differentiate ourselves as the most innovative and customer-oriented Portuguese operator through the development of useful and competitive services, making available the best consumer and business offer in the market.

We operate a GSM/GPRS mobile network with national coverage and pioneered the introduction in Portugal of the main mobile communications technologies (EFR, Dual Band, WAP, 2.5G/GPRS, HSCSD, MMS, 3G/UMTS and 3.5G/HSDPA). We have also been developing and offering various highly innovative technical solutions and facilities to meet the needs of our customers and the general public.

We are constantly in the front line when it comes to test the most recent technologies, such as the Vodafone 4G/LTE first live Demo in Portugal that took place in 2010 and, in June 2011, the launch of Vodafone Connect Pen with which we became one of the first operators in the world to launch a device readied for the future 4G/LTE network.

Vodafone Portugal is wholly owned by the Vodafone Group. Between December 1996 and May 2003, the Company was listed on the Euronext Lisbon, with one of the largest capitalisations on the Portuguese stock market and one of the biggest rises in share price since its admission to listing.
