Pedro Guimarães and José Barbosa win competition for Vodafone’s new office building in Oporto

Lisbon, 20 November 2006 – Architects Pedro Guimarães and José Barbosa, of the Barbosa & Guimarães practice, have been selected to design Vodafone’s new office building in Oporto.

The two architects’ design was selected though an Ideas Tender, to which 50 of Portugal’s most respected architects were invited to contribute.

The selection panel for the ‘Ideas Tender’ was composed of Board members and representatives of Vodafone employees, and a Consultative Committee composed of three renowned Portuguese architects. In addition, the submitted designs were presented in advance to Oporto City Council, giving it the opportunity to offer its opinion – the winning design was included on the Council’s shortlist.

The design responds to Vodafone’s requirements, which are to create a building of major architectural quality both from the functional and aesthetic points of view, and that it should be regarded as one of the most striking buildings in Oporto.

The Vodafone Building will be constructed on two plots at the junction of Avenida da Boavista and Rua Correia de Sá. The building will have an area of around 3500 m2 above ground and is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
