João Carreira Bom Prize awarded to José Manuel dos Santos

Lisbon, 16 May 2007 – The Chairman of Vodafone, António Carrapatoso, today presented the João Carreira Bom Prize for Newspaper Columnists to José Manuel dos Santos for his columns published during 2006 in the weekly newspaper Expresso.

Instituted by the Sociedade da Língua Portuguesa and the website Ciberdúvidas da Língua Portuguesa, the prize, awarded this year for the fourth time, aims to preserve and promote this style of journalism by honouring the best columnist of the year. Previous winners were Eduardo Prado Coelho, Vasco Pulido Valente e Armando Baptista Bastos.

The judging panel for this year’s João Carreira Bom Prize was chaired by university professor and writer Urbano Tavares Rodrigues and also included the President of the Sociedade da Língua Portuguesa, Elsa Rodrigues dos Santos, its vice-president, José Manuel Matias, and journalists Maria José Mauperrin, Fernando Dacosta, Adelino Gomes and José Gabriel Viegas – the last of these representing Vodafone. Vodafone supports the Prize with sponsorship of five thousand euros.
