Lisbon, 27 August 2007 – The environmental study group GEOTA and the Vodafone Portugal Foundation are to organise the ‘Belém – Trancão, a Green Corridor for Lisbon’ initiative on 15 September. This mass cycle ride to call for the creation of a Green Corridor for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area will start at the Belém Tower at 9:30 am and finish at the mouth of the river Trancão at Parque das Nações.

The Green Corridor concept, successfully applied in several European capitals, consists of creating a route which, in addition to providing opportunities for exercise and leisure by linking up green spaces and various heritage sites, will offer Lisbon commuters for the first time an ecological alternative to their usual journey between home and work, especially as a complement to public transport.

This joint initiative by GEOTA and the Vodafone Portugal Foundation as part of European Mobility Week and coming immediately before Car Free Day aims to raise environmental awareness among individuals and society generally and to promote the advantages of a Green Corridor along the waterfront of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

Those interested in participating can register by 7 September, at a notional price of 3 euros until 2 September and 5 euros after that date, at www.belemtrancao.org, where full information about the initiative can be obtained.

Participants will receive a T-shirt and a ticket entitling them to use the Lisbon Metro, Fertagus trains and Transtejo and Soflusa ferries to transport their bikes to and from the ride.
