Mayor of Porto inaugurates Vodafone Building in Porto

The new Vodafone Building in Porto was officially opened today by the Mayor of Porto, Dr. Rui Rio. Also present at the opening were Dr. António Carrapatoso and Mr. António Coimbra, respectively Chairman and CEO of Vodafone Portugal, together with the other members of the company’s Board. Situated in one of the most prestigious areas of the city, Avenida da Boavista, the building, with its bold, innovative lines, projects an impression of movement and dynamism which reflects the Vodafone image.

At the same time, it meets the objective of bringing together in a single place all the company’s departments, until now scattered across the city, thereby improving functionality and customer response capacity. In addition to the functional and customer service aspects, both customers and Vodafone employees in Porto will benefit from the building’s location, with its excellent accessibility and transport links.

The Vodafone building in Porto was designed by architects Jose António Barbosa and Pedro Guimarães of the Barbosa & Guimarães practice, selected by a jury composed of the Board of Vodafone, representatives of the company’s employees and Porto City Council, and an Advisory Board consisting of three leading Portuguese architects.

The new Vodafone building is built on a 1970 m2 plot and has five floors above ground and three below ground. It is 19 metres in height and has a total area of around 7500 m2 and capacity for 240 workstations. It took two years to build and cost 13.4 million euros.

The new building will accommodate the Sales, Customer Care, Operations, Finance and Technology departments, among others, including a mobile phone technical assistance laboratory and a Vodafone shop. There are four open plan upper floors, a ground floor with an auditorium, cafeteria and shop, and three floors below ground, including two for parking and one housing the training centre, technical areas, warehouses and shop basement.

The new building will make it possible to improve processes and logistics, rearrange spaces and departments to reflect market demands, simplify the maintenance and repair of systems and provide better working conditions for employees of Vodafone. The latter will benefit from the Building’s proximity to shopping and leisure areas and from its high standard of environmental comfort, including a garden, parking, restaurant, coffee shop, auditorium and meeting, training and videoconferencing rooms.

Innovative and of recognised architectural quality in both functional and aesthetic terms, the Vodafone Building in Porto augurs to become one of the city’s foremost icons.
