GEOTA, Vodafone Foundation and Loures Council call for the creation of Green Corridors in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area

Lisbon, 4 May 2009 – The planning and environmental study group GEOTA, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation and Loures Municipal Council are to make an appeal on 10 May for the creation of a network of Green Corridors in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Under the slogan “We’re Pedalling”, participants are invited to pedal for this cause in a mass cycle ride starting at Terreiro do Paço at 9:00 am and ending at Loures’s City Park.

Previously organised in 2007 under the Belém-Trancão name, this initiative has a metropolis-wide scope and remains faithful to its main objective of calling for the creation of quality public spaces that offer citizens an alternative to car travel.

More than just an enjoyable bike ride, “We’re Pedalling” is based on good practices in active citizenship by stimulating collective action in support of the common objective of raising environmental awareness and making society more aware of the advantages of such corridors.

Enrolment costs 7 euros and is open until Friday 8 May at www.nospedalamos.org, where full information about the initiative can be obtained.

At the Vodafone shop at Parque das Nações, participants will receive a T-shirt and a ticket entitling them to use the Lisbon Metro, Fertagus/CP trains and Transtejo/Soflusa ferries free of charge to transport their bikes to and from the mass ride.

With numbers of supporters growing, “We’re Pedalling” this year has a very special sponsor – the fado star Mafalda Arnauth, who has aligned herself with the initiative’s objectives and will be joining GEOTA, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation and Loures Municipal Council on this ride.
