Vodafone trains Odivelas senior citizens in new technology

Training to be given to around 150 senior citizens by blind or partially sighted APEC trainers

Lisbon, 22 February 2010 – Training in New Technologies began today for senior citizens in Odivelas Municipality, which Vodafone Portugal will be organising until 12 March. The training initiative, part of Vodafone’s Social Responsibility activities, involves around 150 elderly people aged up to 93 in 14 private homes and day centres for the elderly in Odivelas Municipality.

The training, which will take place daily between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm in the training rooms at Vodafone’s Head Office in Parque das Nações, will be run by four blind or partially sighted trainers from APEC (Association for Education of the Blind).

Learning to use a computer and the Internet are some of the objectives of this course, which will last about three weeks and aim to leave these senior citizens able to use a computer to interact with the world around them.

By the end of this project, which is the result of a partnership with Odivelas Municipal Council, the senior citizens should create a blog about their home or day centre, and a prize for the Best Blog by a Home or Day Centre for the Elderly in Odivelas Municipality will be awarded.
