Vodafone launches Classics of Portuguese Literature for mobile

Lisbon, 20 July 2010 – Vodafone Portugal today launched a set of 32 Classics of Portuguese Literature in e-book format for reading on mobile phones. This initiative, launched jointly with the Portuguese publishing house Atlântico Press and the digital books platform Mobcast, enables users to access titles by great Portuguese authors such as Alexandre Herculano, Almeida Garrett, Bocage, Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queirós, Fernando Pessoa and Gil Vicente on their mobile phones.

The distribution and sale of books on mobile devices has grown considerably in recent years, marking the beginnings of a change in reading habits. Several publishers already offer their titles through online stores such as Amazon for the Kindle and Apple via the iBooks store on the iPad and iPhone.

The Vodafone 360 Apps Shop has been offering e-books since 1 February and already has around 250 different titles from foreign publishers, including best sellers like ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’ and biographies of Princess Diana, Tiger Woods and David Beckham.

Vodafone customers can now access, exclusively for the Portuguese market through the Vodafone 360 Apps Shop, titles like ‘Viagens na Minha Terra’ by Almeida Garrett, ‘Amor de Perdição’ by Camilo Castelo Branco, ‘O Crime do Padre Amaro’ by Eça de Queirós and ‘Mensagem’ by Fernando Pessoa, among many others. The books, of which there will be 18 in the start-up stage, to be joined by a further 14 in the coming weeks, can be purchased and installed on mobile phones for €2.49 or €3.99, depending on the title.

The e-books are available for download to a wide range of mobile phones from the Vodafone Apps Shop. Customers who have not yet installed the Apps Shop on their mobile phone can visit www.360.com, register and search for titles that interest them in the Shop’s “Books’” category. The Mobile Shop and the app can be downloaded and installed free on compatible mobile phones directly from this page.

The set of Portuguese classics now launched exclusively will also be available soon in the Apps Stores for Android phones and the iPhone. Vodafone will continue to expand its e-books offer to all mobile devices which support this format.
