Vodafone Building in Porto voted ‘Building of the Year 2010’

Lisbon, 15 February 2011 – The Vodafone Building in Porto was today voted ‘Building of the Year 2010’ in the Institutional Architecture category by readers of the ArchDaily website (www.archdaily.com), famous for promoting the latest architectural trends.

Last month, the Vodafone Building in Porto was named as one of the 20 most amazing creative offices in the world by The Cool Hunter website (www.thecoolhunter.net), which focuses on culture and design.

With its bold and innovative lines intended to project the identity and values of Vodafone, the Vodafone Building in Porto was designed by architects José António Barbosa and Pedro Guimarães of the Barbosa & Guimarães architectural practice following an Ideas Competition launched by Vodafone Portugal in the summer of 2006.

Vodafone’s objective was to create a building of great architectural quality from both the functional and aesthetic point of view which would be seen as one of Porto’s iconic buildings.

The selection panel for the Ideas Competition was composed of Vodafone Board members and employees and representatives of Porto City Council, with a Consultative Committee of three renowned Portuguese architects.

The Vodafone Building in Porto was constructed on two plots of land at the junction of Avenida da Boavista and Rua Correia de Sá and has an area of approximately 3550 m2 above ground. The building, which can accommodate around 240 employees, brings together in one place the various Vodafone departments that were previously spread between 4 locations in the city.

Opened in October 2009 in the presence of the Chairman of Vodafone Portugal and the Mayor of Porto, the Vodafone Building has quickly become one of the architectural landmarks of the city of Porto.
