Vodafone unveils 4G

At a press conference today Vodafone Portugal unveiled the new 4G (Fourth Generation Mobile) solutions that it will shortly be offering in Portugal.

After being the first operator to launch a Mobile Internet device compatible with 4G technology, Vodafone has introduced two new price plans, the Best Net 4G 50 with a monthly charge of €49.99, and the Best Net 4G 100 with a monthly charge of € 59.99. The Best Net 4G 50 plan enables speeds up to 50 Mbps (download) and 25 Mbps (upload), while the Best Net 4G 100 plan raises these figures to 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. The 4G Ready Vodafone Connect Pen will now cost € 159.90 – € 40 less than before.

4G technology allows higher speeds and lower latency (response time), significantly improving user experience in a range of services such as multi-player online games, high performance cloud platforms, streaming audio and video and innovative applications in areas such as health, safety or education.

Antonio Coimbra, Vodafone Portugal’s CEO, says that “4G has enormous potential for the development of new and better mobile services. As with earlier technologies, Vodafone will lead the development of 4G in Portugal, providing Portugal with ultra-high bandwidth infrastructures to meet increasing demand in terms of speed and data volumes and providing new services to its customers via smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices”.

Vodafone will be rolling out 4G throughout Portugal, with the initial coverage serving thirteen district capitals – Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal, Faro, Funchal and Ponta Delgada. 4G coverage will be progressively expanded later to other urban areas and the rest of the country.
