Complaint lodged with ICAP today

Vodafone accuses Optimus of misleading advertising

Vodafone Portugal has today lodged a complaint with the advertising self-regulatory body ICAP against the advertising campaign launched yesterday in the press and outdoor media by Optimus, claiming that it is the only operator to offer access to the 4G network on the latest Apple devices (iPhone 5, fourth generation iPad and iPad Mini).

Since 28 January, with the launch of the new version of Apple’s mobile operating system (iOS 6.1), the latest devices from the American manufacturer have been able to access 4G/LTE technology on the Vodafone Portugal’s network, a fact that Vodafone immediately notified to its customers, sales network and the media.

This access is supported in the 1800MHz frequency, the only band supported on Apple devices for accessing 4G technology.

The message conveyed by the advertising campaign in question is therefore unfounded and misleads consumers, thereby violating the most basic principles of advertising. Vodafone Portugal now looks forward to a speedy decision by the Advertising Ethics Committee of ICAP on the misleading content of this campaign, so that the advertising materials concerned can be removed and the truth promptly reinstated.
