Bathing season opens on the beach of the North Urban Zone of Póvoa de Varzim

The Verão de Campeão (Champion Summer) programme began today on the beach of the North Urban Zone of Póvoa do Varzim, and symbolically signals the opening of the bathing season. It is an initiative of the Vodafone Portugal Foundation, in collaboration with the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (Portuguese Lifeguard Institute), which is organising initiatives to raise awareness as regards the Environment and Safety during the bathing season, for the sixth consecutive year. A total of 180,000 children have so far benefited from these initiatives.

The start of the Verão de Campeão programme allowed around 400 children from the region to take part in several entertainment activities, such as games illustrating the risks caused by lack of care, and information to be disseminated about how to get the best out of their beach experience, using simple and fun learning processes. The participants in the actions also received several gifts, such as T-shirts, caps and balls, among other presents.

This initiative was attended by: Mr. Aires Pereira, Vice-President of the Municipal Council of Póvoa de Varzim, Ms. Luísa Pestana, President of the Executive Committee of the Vodafone Foundation, Mr. Manuel Lacerda, Vice-President of the Portuguese Environmental Agency and Vice-Admiral Álvaro da Cunha Lopes, Managing Director of the Maritime Authority.
