Vodafone Portugal Foundation

‘Beaches Live’ app provides real time information on 174 bathing beaches

The Vodafone Portugal Foundation, in partnership with the Portuguese Navy – Portuguese Lifeguard Institute, has just released a new version of the ‘Beaches Live’ app for smartphones and tablets with iOS and Android operating systems. The application can also be accessed via PCs using the web version at .

Following its successful launch in August 2011, the free ‘Beaches Live’ app now covers 174 coastal and river bathing beaches (150 more than in the previous version), providing real time information on tides (courtesy of the Navy’s Hydrographic Institute), waves, atmospheric pressure and bathing water quality (information courtesy of the Portuguese Environment Agency), in addition to the parameters already available in the previous version: UV index, water temperature and pH, air temperature and humidity, percentage of dissolved oxygen, wind speed and direction.

Another new feature is that all the information on Portuguese beaches covered by the app is now available in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

The data provided by the ‘Beaches Live’ service are measured by mobile monitoring stations which transmit continuously measured data to the application. The information is transmitted on Vodafone Portugal’s GPRS network.

This application is part of the Healthy Beaches programme begun by the Vodafone Portugal Foundation in 2005, which aims to help improve safety and environmental quality on beaches, and accessibility for disabled people. Over the past eight years, the Vodafone Portugal Foundation has invested nearly eight million euros in implementing the Healthy Beaches programme.
