Celfocus/Vodafone opens technology research centre at the University of Porto Science and Technology Park

Celfocus (a partnership between Vodafone Portugal and Novabase) today opened a research and development centre at the University of Porto Science and Technology Park in the presence of the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva. The objective is to bring together and enhance the knowledge and human capital of the University and the telecommunications sector.

The new centre is housed in premises of around 500m2 where the University of Porto’s highly specialised human resources will be actively incorporated with those of other institutions that teach Engineering and Technology subjects. The centre will develop products and services for the telecommunications market, particularly: information systems, machine-to-machine solutions, communications solutions for businesses and real-time monitoring systems for telecommunications networks and services.

Celfocus will have a team of over 100 specialists in Porto to carry out highly complex activities and provide internships to students from surrounding universities. It will also work in partnership with and foster the development of start- ups incubated at UPTEC.

With this investment, Celfocus/Vodafone is aiming to foster wealth creation and development of the business sector in Porto District, and to promote itself as a research centre of excellence, drawing strongly on national expertise and with a significant export component.

Students and professionals involved in the centre will be able to participate in the development of projects both in Vodafone Portugal (My Vodafone, Vodafone One Net and Vodafone TV are some of the services highlighted), and in a wider group of Vodafone Group operators and other external markets for which Celfocus develops technological solutions and which represent a significant part of its turnover.
