Vodafone announces expansion of its fibre network to 2.75 million homes and businesses

Vodafone Portugal announced today that it will extend its next-generation fibre network (FTTH) to a further 550,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2016, expanding the coverage of its network to over 2.75 million, equivalent to more than two thirds of Portugal’s households and businesses, involving a total investment of 125 million euros.

According to Mário Vaz, “Our commitment is to our customers and so we do everything we can to find solutions that enable us to bring our service to them. This can be by constructing our own network, or by network sharing or co-investment or through wholesale agreements, so we are keeping open all opportunities that enable us to achieve this objective”.

Vodafone Portugal has always supported co-investment and infrastructure sharing as a way of ensuring access for all to the benefits of the digital economy, which can only be fully achieved using the technological capabilities that next generation networks provide.

Vodafone Portugal began construction of its fibre network in 2010. In May 2014, Vodafone Portugal was the first to offer services over next generation networks in rural areas and announced Project Spring to extend its network to 1.5 million homes. In July that year it announced a fibre co-investment agreement to connect a further 900,000 homes.

Today, Vodafone Portugal’s fibre network serves over 2.2 million homes and businesses, surpassing the previously announced target of 2.1 million.
