Vodafone is the first operator in Portugal to offer VoLTE, the most advanced 4G voice technology

Positioning itself at the forefront of innovation, Vodafone today, for the first time in Portugal, launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE), the most advanced voice technology in the 4G network. With this launch, Vodafone is taking a further step in the development of its network, addressing the current and future needs of its customers.

VoLTE technology, also known as 4G Voice, is based on industry standards, allowing voice and data to be carried quickly and efficiently over a next generation network specifically designed and optimised for the future. This new technology is available everywhere within the Vodafone network’s 4G coverage in Portugal.

With VoLTE, Vodafone customers will have access to HD Voice+, a development of the HD Voice (high definition voice) technology launched by Vodafone in 2012 and available throughout Portugal.

In addition to superior, crystal clear and noise-free voice quality, VoLTE technology offers faster call set-up and the possibility of making 4G voice and data communications simultaneously and at high speed.

This technology is especially important for services with the newly launched Vodafone Call+, which allows live video streaming and the sharing of high quality content during a call.

VoLTE also places less demand on the batteries of mobile phones, since all communications, both voice and data, are carried on the 4G network, reducing passage between different networks (2G, 3G and 4G), which is normally very demanding on battery life.

The VoLTE technology will be rolled out gradually to customers with compatible equipment and software. Initially, these devices will be the Microsoft Lumia 640 and Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. In the coming months, the service will be extended to all makes and models with compatible software.

This is a further example of the major investment by Vodafone in the development of its mobile and fixed networks, and its coverage, capacity and advanced features, enabling its customers to benefit from the best service with confidence.
