Vodafone Portugal leads growth in pay-TV over last four years

Vodafone Portugal has led the growth in pay-TV services in Portugal for 16 consecutive quarters.

According to data just published by Anacom for September, Vodafone Portugal is the operator that has been attracting the most pay-TV subscribers, in net terms, since the third quarter of 2013, completing four years’ leadership of this segment.

“For four consecutive years now, month after month, the Portuguese have given us the satisfaction and recognition of being their favourite TV operator. This leadership, which deserves to be marked, is proof of the superiority of Vodafone’s offer. The company has democratised and rejuvenated access to pay-TV in Portugal, breaking the duopoly that used to characterise the market, and has achieved an unchallenged role not only nationally, but also in the Vodafone Group as a whole”, said Mário Vaz, CEO of Vodafone Portugal.

In recent years, the company has undergone a profound structural transformation from, historically, a mobile operator to being today widely recognised as a global communications operator.

Building on shareholders’ trust and its focus on the Portuguese market, the company has modernised and expanded its next-generation mobile and fixed networks and advanced internet and television services, investing more than 900 million euros in recent years.

To ensure access by all to the benefits of the digital economy, which can only be fully assured by taking advantage of the technological potential that next-generation networks enable, Vodafone recently announced an agreement that will allow it to reach 4 million homes and businesses, bringing greater competition and choice to a further 40% of the country.

In an increasingly competitive and convergent sector, Vodafone is continually surprising its customers, who give its TV Net Voz service the highest satisfaction and recommendation ratings, according to the Marktest Telecommunications Barometer.

Underpinning this recognition is the quality of the service it provides – the fastest installation on the market and the proven quality seal, which allows customers to check the fibre speeds they contracted at the time of installation – as well as a wide range of innovations introduced on the market in recent years.

Some examples of this are Live on TV, a ground-breaking service that allows users to watch on television, live and from anywhere in the world, everything filmed with their GoPro cameras; the development of the multiscreen concept, with the launch of the watch, the portable projector and the portable TV box, which provide access to the television service anytime, anywhere; the first “T-Commerce” service, which enables users to purchase products and services in a simple, contextualised and convenient way via their television sets; and the launch of Studo, a television app that challenges schoolchildren to solve school exercises to unlock access to their favourite channels.

As a result of its technological leadership, Vodafone Portugal has been selected by the Vodafone Group to host the Competence Centre for the Development and Management of Next Generation Television. Known as TV Hub, this Centre, inaugurated in October 2016, will be the innovation laboratory that is creating the Television of the Future for the various markets where the Vodafone Group operates.

In the last quarter (July to September 2017), the fixed business once again posted strong growth, with the customer base increasing by 15.2% YoY, exceeding 629,000 in terms of total new subscriptions.
