Optimus and Vodafone sign partnership deal for next generation networks

Lisbon, 17 December 2010 – Optimus and Vodafone Portugal signed today a sharing agreement of next generation optical fibre networks (NGNs) in Lisbon and Oporto. This partnership will allow the two operators to launch commercial offers within this new framework by the first quarter of 2011.

Optimus and Vodafone believe that the current agreement under which the networks remain the property of each company, will generate synergies and offer a simplified solution for the implementation of the partnership earlier announced. The two companies also consider the possibility of opening the NGN sharing agreement to other interested operators.

The execution of an agreement with these characteristics, in one of the most competitive sectors of the Portuguese economy and in an area as important as NGN, is especially significant. While maintaining the commercial and competitive independence of each company, the agreement will provide greater economies in investment in NGNs, with clear benefits for the Customers, the development of the Information and Knowledge Society and Portugal.

The execution of this agreement is an important step for the creation of NGNs open to all interested operators, rationalising investment at a particularly crucial moment for Portugal, promoting competition with sustainability and enabling the offer of competitively priced, high speed, advanced and diversified services.
