Vodafone Portugal Foundation launches innovative 'Beaches Live' app with information about water, air and ultraviolet radiation parameters

The Vodafone Portugal Foundation, in partnership with the Portuguese Navy’s National Lifeguard Institute, today launched the ‘Beaches Live’ application – an innovative Web App with information in real time about beaches in Portugal. The UV index, water temperature and pH, air temperature and humidity, percentage dissolved oxygen, and wind speed and direction are just some of the data provided on the 24 bathing beaches around Portugal covered by this initiative in the launch year.

The innovative feature of this application consists basically in the way mobile technology is used in the measurement of the water, air and ultraviolet radiation parameters by means of mobile monitoring stations that transmit the measured data continuously to the app. The data is transmitted on Vodafone Portugal’s GPRS network.

The ‘Beaches Live’ app is available in web version for tablets, PCs and smartphones at and via SMS by sending the name of one of the beaches covered to 91 569 00 83.

This application forms part of the Safety aspect of the ‘Healthy Beaches’ programme begun by the Vodafone Portugal Foundation in 2005, which aims to help improve safety and environmental quality on beaches, and accessibility for disabled people. The Vodafone Portugal Foundation has invested around seven million euros in implementing this programme over the past seven years.
