Vodafone Portugal acquires spectrum to ensure launch of 5G services

Vodafone Portugal has acquired 110 MHz of spectrum from ANACOM for a total cost of €133.2 m.   The spectrum will enable Vodafone Portugal to significantly expand 5G network capacity to meet the growing demand for reliable, high quality voice and data services.

Vodafone Portugal has acquired a total of 110 MHz, comprising:

  • 700 MHz – 2x10 MHz for €38.8 million, licensed for 20 years;
  • 3.6 GHz – 90 MHz for €94.8 million, licensed for 20 years.

Mário Vaz, CEO of Vodafone Portugal, commented: “The outcome of this auction ensures that we are now able to provide an excellent 5G service to our customers.  I am fundamentally disappointed that the flawed design of the auction and the extraordinary length of time it took to conclude means that Portugal’s 5G rollout now lags other European countries - with damaging consequences for Portuguese people, businesses and the wider economy.”

Vodafone Portugal has the following spectrum holdings before and after the auction:
