Meanwhile, the “netc” portal will create a special page, with access to various information concerning International Youth Day, the schedule of commemorative events and games connected to this theme.

The International Youth Day is to be celebrated this year for the first time. The decision to declare 12 August the International Youth Day was taken in Lisbon on 12 August 1998 at the 1st World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.

It was the first time that Portugal, on the initiative of the Ministry of Youth, held a World Conference in co-operation with the United Nations, bringing together more than 160 Member States and UN Observers, Specialised Agencies, Intergovernmental and Non-Governmental Organisations, out of a total of 2,500 registered participants.

On the last day of the Conference on 12 August, the Lisbon Declaration was adopted concerning Policies and Programmes with regard to Youth, where the signing Governments committed themselves to promoting and implementing, among others, promotional measures guaranteeing the young rights to participation, development, peace, education, employment and health. A resolution was also approved recommending the creation of the International Youth Day, as a way of making people aware of the problems and aspirations of the young in the whole world, in the background of peace, solidarity and participation. This recommendation was ratified in December 1999 by the 54th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
