Telecel expands Cellular Broadcast Service

Telecel Cellular Broadcast Service, which allows to receive – free from charge – different types of information and local information in the display of cellular telephones, has since January 20, seven new channels and was expanded to most of national territory, now covering about 60% of Portuguese population.

Telecel is the only Portuguese operator to supply this Service, which broadcasts information for limited geographical areas, allowing the content to be customised according with the areas where the Customer is. If a Customer is, for example, in Coimbra, and is looking for a pharmacy opened 24 hours, he will get the information requested by accessing the suitable channel of Cellular Broadcast Service.

This is a pilot project, initially launched in June 1998 in Lisbon, and which was after used for broadcasting information over activities in Expo 98. Its coverage was now substantially expanded and will include all the area between Douro valley and Tejo valley, including the districts of Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Guarda, Leiria, Lisboa, Porto (partially), Santarém e Viseu (partially), as well as Autonomous Region of Madeira. This service will be soon expanded to the remaining of the national territory.

Using the eight channels of Telecel Cellular Broadcast Service, it is possible to get free information about Totobola and Totoloto (channel 13), sports newspapers headlines and football results (channel 14), headlines of some daily newspapers (channel 15), as well as information about pharmacies opened 24 hours (channel 24) and telephone numbers of the closest hospitals (channel 20), advising and support services (channel 21), taxis (channel 34) and gas stations working 24 hours (channel 36).

To benefit from this service, Telecel Customer must have equipment supporting cellular broadcasting, have the service enabled on the telephone, select the correct channel and be in the broadcast area.
