Telecel's TeleMultibanco service to be accessed through WAP

Lisbon, 22 August 2000 – Today Telecel announces its TeleMultibanco service can now be accessed using WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) technology. The new WAP TeleMultibanco service will be the first of its kind in Portugal and will make banking via mobile phone much easier.

The initial TeleMultibanco service was launched by Telecel in 1996, and at the time was regarded as an international innovation. Customers with WAP handsets will be able to access their bank account balances, pay telephone, water or electricity bills, and transfer cash between bank accounts, besides other possibilities, in the same way as using the traditional ATM machines.

Having pioneered WAP technology, Telecel intends to lead the mobile data revolution in Portugal through its innovative and high quality content WAP portal as well as through GPRS technology, which Telecel expects to launch at the end of 2000.
