Vodafone organises sofa race for the best seats at Rock in Rio

Lisbon, 26 April 2006 – Vodafone is to give away tickets for the Best Seat at Rock in Rio Lisbon 2006 to the 40 winners of a race between red sofas that the brand is to organise on 7 May outside its head office in Parque das Nações in Lisbon as part of its sponsorship of the rock festival.

The winners will be entitled to choose the show featuring their favourite artist, which they will be able to watch from the Best Seat Vodafone Rock in Rio Lisbon 2006, the most coveted spot from which to watch the festival’s concerts.

The race for the Best Seat is an original trial, unprecedented in Portugal, consisting of 5 races between sofas (equipped with wheels and a brake), each corresponding to one day of the festival, fought out in an atmosphere of colour and speed reminiscent of Formula 1, with the start and finish lines at Vodafone’s Action Store.

In each race, 10 teams of 4 people, one of whom must be a Vodafone customer, have to make three laps of half of Vodafone’s head office … on a sofa! The two “fastest” sofas in each race will be declared the winners.

Although only the 40 members of the 10 winning teams will be entitled to watch their favourite band from the special seats, Vodafone will be giving all 200 participants free entrance tickets to Rock in Rio Lisbon 2006.

To take part, potential “sofa aces” should register for the trials by 2 May on the website www.vodafone.pt. The initial selection will be based on creativity in the choice of team names, their mottoes and their order of registration. Teams composed of males and females will have precedence.

Vodafone will provide 50 sofas, one per team, which can be decorated from 10:00 am on the day of the race with materials of the participants’ choice. During the race, all the “drivers” will wear safety equipment – helmets, kneepads and elbow pads. On the winners’ podium, just as at a Formula 1 Grand Prix, the winners will spray the crowd with champagne.

In addition, on 2 May, Vodafone will give away a further 200 tickets for the Best Seat at Rock in Rio through its Vodafone live! mobile portal. These actions are part of the innovative way in which Vodafone is promoting its sponsorship of Rock in Rio Lisboa 2006. It has already held singing duels in Metro stations and competitions on RFM and Mega FM, launched a Rock in Rio handset campaign and installed giant guitars in Lisbon displaying the countdown to the festival.
